Infertility
What is infertility?
The term infertility refers to the inability to conceive after one year of contraceptive-free intercourse. If pregnancy does not occur within a year among those younger than 35, or after 6 months among those older than 35, it is recommended to seek help from a reproductive medicine specialist.
Gender specific factors tend to contribute to infertility about equally. Of all infertility cases, 40% can be attributed to male factors, 40% to female factors, 10% are caused by combined factors and the cause cannot be exactly determined in only about 10% of all cases.
Every year, 8 to 10 thousand couples seek medical help for infertility and this trend has been growing over time. About one out of five couples of reproductive age is affected by fertility problems.
